Glycerol

A trihydroxy sugar alcohol. Glycerol is important because it forms the "backbone" or base to which lipids or fats attach. This temporary attachment is important as an imtermediary in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, as glycerol holds fats until they are needed for various parts of general metabolism.
