Abequose
There are quite a few different sugars in existence, each with their own chemical characteristics such as taste, colour, etc. As we discussed in our carbohydrates section, saccharide is another name for sugar. There are a few important terms for describing sugars, and these are included in our discrussing on carbohydrates. Abequose is an unusual sugar. It is a polysaccharide (multiple sugar subunits bonded together to give a long chain-like sugar). Abequose is found in the cell surfaces of bacteria such as Salmonella species. This polysaccharide acts as an antigen and thus triggers an immune response in the host that acquired the salmonella infection.
