Aldehyde-The aldehydes are a large group of chemicals that have in common, a "-CHO" functional group at the end of their carbon tail. Different aldehydes are formed as breakdown products in the body during normal metabolism. For exampe, ethanol, the alcohol contained in alcoholic beverages, is metabolised in the liver to yield acetaldehyde. The conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde requires the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase also produced by the hepatocytes (functional cells of the liver) of the liver. Through another chemical reaction, the acetaldehyde is converted into acetate and removed.
