Globoside-One of the glycosphingolipids containing amino sugars and simple hexoses. Globosides contain a cererbrosides linked to a galactose molecule and a glucose molecule. This glycolipid is important in the progression of Sandhoff's disease. Sandhoff's disease is a genetic condition whereby, globosides are not metabolized and accumulate, causing mental retardation, muscular weakness, seizures, blindess, and death. This devastating condition is similar to Tay-Sachs disease, but progresses at a faster rate. Like many of the genetically inherited conditions, enzymes for metabolising lipids are missing. When an enzyme for metabolising a lipid is "missing" or not produced by an individual, these lipids accumulate and cause damage to the tissue or cells that they "overload".
