Glycerite

Glycerites are medicinal mixtures containing any one or more of medicinal substances mixed with glycerin. There are different types of glycerites, such as starch and tannic acid glycerites. There are many derivations that can be made. usually, mixtures are made with long-standing recipes (ingredients), since they have been long tried and tested. For example, starch glycerite is composed of glycerin, starch, benzoic acid, and water. This mixture is sold as an emollient (skin softening or soothing agent). Tannic acid glycerite is composed of tannic acid, sodium citrate, sodium sulfite, and glycerin. Because of the high percentage of tannic acid, this mixture is produced and marketed as an astringent, causing contraction. Astringent is also known as styptic, meaning "astringent" or "arresting haemorrhage" (bleeding) because of an astringent quality.
