glycine-The smallest of the amino acids. The chemical name is aminoacetic acid. This is
one of the nonessential amino acids and occurs in a variety of dietary
proteins.
It is glycogenic (can be used to produce glycogen), is used in many biochemical reactions in the body,
including purine ( chemical component of DNA and RNA) formation, and is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central
nervous system. Glycine is also made into preparations as a dietary supplement,
gastric antacid, and for bladder irrigation [for transurethral prostatectomy patients
(removal of the prostate gland)]
