Histamine
Histamine-A decarboxylation product of the
amino acid histadine. Histamine is found in
all body tissues, especially the mast cells and basophils, the highest concentration
being in the lungs. The functions of histidine include 1) dilation of capillaries, which
increase the permeability of the capillary and result in a reduction in blood pressure,
2) causing smooth muscle to contract, including the bronchial smooth muscle of the lungs.
This is observed in allergic reactions and asthmatic attacks, 3) Stimulation of
gastric secretions 4) increases in heart rate and 5) possible neurotransmission.
