A 6 carbon sugar alcohol. In nature, mannitol is made from mannose or sucrose and can be found in plants and fungi. Specially prepared solutions of mannitol are employed in medicine intravenously as diuretics, reducing cerebrospinal and intraocular pressure, as well as for other uses.
