Monosaccharides

Mono=1, or single and saccharide=sugar. Monosaccharides are the simple sugars: solitary, they exist as single molecules. If monosaccharides are bonded or connected together, then they are part of a "polysaccharide" (poly=many, saccharide=sugar), or simply a chain sugar. Monosaccharides are classified in accordance with the number of carbons in their carbon chain. For example, six carbon sugars are called hexoses (Greek, hex=6). Monosaccharides are further classified on whether they are aldoses or ketoses.
