A pentose is a sugar that contains 5 carbon atoms in its molecular structure. Pentoses can be further classified into other groupings such as aldopentoses (see aldose), which are pentoses with an aldehyde group attached to the molecule. Ribose is an example of a pentose, and an aldopentose.
