Plants
Plants play a major role in our lives.
Without plants, life on this planet would cease to exist. Plants remove carbon
dioxide (CO2) from the environment while enriching it
with oxygen (O2) . Plants act as a food source, providing all the essential nutrients
required for the human diet. The right combination of plants are able provide us with
sufficient protein, for structural components of the body,
carbohydrates as an energy source,
healthy fats as both, an energy source, and structural components for
building healthy cells,
vitamins,
minerals, and
water,
Plants also provide extra benefits, such as fibre
for the gastrointestinal tract. Many plants produce
interesting and chemically diverse substances which can be used as
drugs or medicines in the human as well as other animals.
Larger plants such as trees
yield wood, which can be used as shelter as well as wood for fuels.
Although humans cannot digest wood,
termites and a few other insects can, thanks to the relationshop they have
formed with wood-digesting bacteria that reside in their digestive tracts. The
list of contributions that plants provides to humans is virtually endless. Click on the links
below to learn how plants benefit humans nutritionally, medicinally, and other ways, as well
as how they can harm us"
