Tartrazine
Tartrazine is also known as FD&C yellow number 5 and E102. Tartrazine is
a synthetic yellow azo (chemical group containing nitrogen) dye that is added to foods (eg., fruit squashes, cordials, puddings, cakes)
medicines (eg., cough syrups, capsule coatings and pills), and other
products. The problems that have occurred with tartrazine are allergic reactions, some
fatal. There has also been cross reactions with aspirin. There have been cases
of asthmatics reporting respitory epidsodes (asthmatic attacks) after consuming
products containing tartrazine. Other individuals have experienced migraines and
skin problems such as eczema (dermatitis). Implications with
hyperactivity in children have also been noted.
